Community Engagement Specialist


The Roxbury Public Library seeks an energetic and self- motivated Community Engagement Specialist for a part-time position.  The Community Engagement Specialist focuses on Roxbury Library’s outreach efforts in reaching and serving diverse and underserved user populations, by learning their needs and developing and providing needed programs and services.

Designs, plans, promotes and evaluates library outreach programs with the Adult Services Team for various community groups including but not limited to underserved community members such as adults with intellectual disabilities and senior living communities.  Assesses new needs for outreach services.  Ensures everyone can see themselves in the Library.

The successful candidate must have excellent communication skills. The ability to both work independently and interact effectively with staff and volunteers in a professional and positive manner is expected. 

 Applicants must possess the willingness to learn new skills, good judgment and initiative. Experience in a public library or related non-profit is preferred. The Roxbury Public Library is a Passport Acceptance Facility. All staff are trained as Passport Agents. The applicant would need to meet the criteria to become an agent. 

 

REQUIREMENTS

College graduate (Bachelor-level degree required) /or MLS

US Citizen

Knowledge of characteristics and needs of diverse populations including underserved community groups.

Must be able to work a flexible schedule to accommodate library programs. 


PREFERRED

Bilingual Spanish/English speaking, reading and writing


ESSENTIAL DUTIES (INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO:)

Creates a welcoming environment for all patrons and staff by seeking to understand, respect, and value individual differences.
Research, coordinate, and implement programs and services suited to the needs of adults and families both at and outside the library. 
Plans, coordinates, delivers, and evaluates informative and relevant public programs.
Works collaboratively with staff, community partners, and members of the primary communities served to define needs and design programs and services.  Utilize community resources and organizational support in delivery of program services. 
Assists in promoting library use, and helps create lifelong library users. Responsible for maintaining budget expenditures to stay within the appropriate levels as assigned. 
Work directly with library administration, staff, and the public, involving them in planning and development of programs. 
Work effectively with staff to market programs and services using all available media (print, electronic, etc.) .
Makes selections to and removal of items from the collection to keep collection appealing, current and relevant to the community. 
Stays knowledgeable with current events, popular and local culture. Prepares clear, accurate and informative narrative and statistical reports.
Comprehends, analyzes and interprets rules, regulations, policies and procedures of the library.
Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge of the principles and objectives of librarianship.
Ability to work harmoniously with coworkers, members of the public, administration, outside groups and other stakeholders.
Presents welcoming behaviors and practices effective interviewing skills to best determine the patron’s actual needs.

Excellent writing and editing skills.
Working knowledge of typical office software used in a Windows and Google environment.

Highly organized with good attention to detail and the ability to work under pressure, multi-task and juggle a variety of projects in a solution-oriented manner.

Schedule: Up to 20 hours a week including every Sunday and at least 1 evening a week. 


Rate: 

$22.28 per hour for Library Associate

$27.88 per hour for Librarian
